Implementing and Monitoring Water-related SDGs in Turbulent Times and Areas

The SDGs intend to set a common global vision to pave the way for a more safe and resilient world by advocating a positive change built on the values of solidarity, equality, environmental protection, innovation and inclusive governance. However, as the world is experiencing changing tensions, the universal applicability of the SDGs confronts with new constraints.

As one of the burning issues of today, the mass flow of refugees displaced from their countries rises significant concerns for the implementation and monitoring of the SDGs in various aspects. The UN Secretary-General stated in the Synthesis Report on the Post-2015 Agenda that the new framework “must not exclude migrants, refugees, displaced persons, or persons affected by conflict and occupation”. Nevertheless, access to safe drinking water and sanitation has become one of the rising challenges due to the increasing number of refugees in host countries.

Will the wide-ranging and ambitious 2030 agenda of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) be able to succeed its global targets in the changing dynamics of our world? Within this scope, this session will tackle the refugee crisis and implementation of the SDGs from a water-oriented perspective. A theoretical discussion is aimed to be developed through sharing of experiences from different regions of the world.
