Plenary Session: Water for Peace

Today, importance of water for maintenance and establishment of peace is widely recognized. Since water is essential to every aspect of life from health to social well-being, environment to economy, water issues can not be dealt with in isolation. In 2016, water crisis is listed as the third most impactful risk ahead of the large-scale involuntary migration ranking fourth in the Global Risks Report by the World Economic Forum. Thus, management of water issues in ways that advance peace would have multiple benefits beyond water field. Stability, social cohesion, sustainable development and prosperity can all be strengthened by cooperation over water.

Water is at the same time a means of survival for people in conflict times. Ensuring sustainable access to clean water and sanitation for all requires further cooperation in emergency context. Global refugee crisis intensified the need for a collaborative approach at different levels in response to water related challenges as the impacts of displacement are felt both in conflict zones and in host countries.

The main objective of this session is to address today’s pressing water-related challenges with a specific focus on global refugee crisis, but also the opportunities for cooperation over water as a means of peace. The session seeks to answer the question: How to transform the collaborative humanitarian agenda into a collaborative peace and development agenda by using water cooperation?
